mariposaHD.tv guide to buying an HDTV

DLPs, LCDs, Plasmas, and projectors that natively output 720P, 1080i or 1080p all make excellent HDTV displays. They produce sharp, vivid pictures that will make you never want to watch a Standard Definition broadcast again. All of these HDTV technologies offer wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles which allow for flexible seating arrangements.

Sony Rear Projection LCDs and Samsung DLPs, we believe, should be the first choice for most HDTV buyers. They:

  • produce amazingly clear pictures
  • offer excellent value in terms of price, size, and quality
  • are amongst the most consistently well reviewed HDTVs on the internet
  • perform well in a variety of light environments
  • do not suffer from image burn-in (great news for video game fans)
  • are much smaller/lighter than Rear Projection TV’s of the past
  • are extremely energy-efficient

Flat Panel HDTVs are an excellent choice for a modern/trendy living space and a big bankroll. They:

  • are extremely space efficient (thin and wall mountable)
  • perform well in a variety of light environments
  • have the potential for image burn-in when playing video games for extended periods

Projectors are a good choice for viewers creating their own “basement theatres”. They:

  • Offer unmatched size as screens can be adjusted up to 100”
  • Require full control over room lighting, with no light whatsoever spilling onto the screen

How big should my HDTV be?

Screen size is often a matter of personal choice affected by room size, budget, whether or not you have a spouse, etc. However, the increased screen resolution afforded by HDTV allows viewers to sit much closer to the TV than was the case in a SD world. This calls for a bigger HDTV!

HDTV Size (diagonal) and Optimal HD Viewing Distance
22" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 3'-4' feet

42" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 6'-8' feet

50" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 7'-9' feet

60" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 8'-10'feet

Be sure to take into account the depth of the television when determining how far your chairs will be from the television. With HD, it is best to error a little on the larger side. You won't be dissapointed.
