thanks Skype!

Skype - call the world at rock bottom pricesFirst of all, for those that already have Skype, nice work!  If not why not get with the program and download Skype!

Skype is one of those wonderful inventions that the general public is unfortunately slow to acknowledge or get.  Like ReplayTV and then Tivo and then the iPod and then HDTV and then the potential of the Sony HDV Cameras...aaaah the burden of an early adopter to help the masses out.  But I digress...

Skype has allowed the founders and countless contributors to the creation of mariposaHD to stay in touch with friends and each other in our separate travels covering a total of 6 continents.  We have even held a team video conference which took place in 4 different countries by 5 different folks.

All for free?  Yes, Skype can be all for free.  It is still cheap even if your friends don't have Skype.  We're also assuming one's laptop can steal wireless.  Headphones and a webcam may come in handy.

If you don't have a cam, I'd suggest ponying up and buying something useful at the end of this year.  Yes, for the time of year that most of you lie to your children I suggest buying them one of these cameras.  Why not get Sony's entry-level, high quality, super maneuverable and incognito new HDV camcorder.  You can use it as a webcam for Skype videoconferencing or to record your own videos in 1080p HDTV.  It also serves as an excellent still camera.

Also, why not kill the lie that is santaclaus?

if feels good being an early adopter

jeff's picture

i spent a muy tranquilo saturday afternoon chatting with some amigos in argentina from my coffin 1br san francisco apartment today. One of my skype convert ex-pat buddies down there blurts, as he's skype messenging his wife in china, "i can't believe this call is free!" several times throughout our conversation. This is the joy we early adopters receive from our friends as we help make the world a better place to live.

Honestly when you sit back, explore google earth, and contemplate the big picture technologies allowing skype to work it'll make you scratch your head. It's baffling to think that from 1 wireless router in an early 1900s 3 flat in palermo argentina our flawless conversations are converted to electronic bits that jump to uruguay and then run under the ocean to miami...then from miami the data branches it's way to me in my free wireless in san francisco.

Hmmm, i can't help but think that once the masses catch on to these types of services it can't be good holdin at&t sibling stock. I would't pay for vonage either. Thanks Global Crossing. And also, thanks USA for wiring and connecting our earth. Clearly many of the fabulous ideas and technologies making up this global network are thanks to the fabulous minds from throughout the world collaborating and competing in the USA. Along with many wonderful humanitarian projects like the 100 dollar laptop spawned from american capitalist dollars & braniacs @ mit, many other humans in the world will benefit from the incredible communal power of the internet to evolve the course of earth's future.

good skype etiquette

a nice feature of skype is you should messenge first to see if your friend or coworker is available. Obviously "emergencies" warrant an immediate phone call.

etiquette is class.
